Advantages of Knitted Gauzes

Improved catalytic properties of knitted catalyst gauzes are obtained by loose structure while the number of gauzes in the pack is not increased to reach the equivalent weight. SEM analysis shows that the reagents go further into the gauze supposedly because of a longer distance the gas flow has to go before the reaction takes place so the contact time is longer too. One significant feature of knitted gauze is that unlike woven gauze the wire crossover points are open to gas contact. In woven gauzes the potential area for catalysis is masked resulting in 10% loss in the theoretically available catalysis area. Therefore to achieve equal yield it has been possible to reduce the weight of knitted gauzes packs.

Unlike woven gauzes knitted gauzes are produced from finer wire (typical Russian woven gauzes are fabricated from wire of 0.092 mm). Hence knitted gauzes are lighter. Knitted catalyst gauzes can be produced of different structure types. The resulted pack has a greater reaction surface and of high elongation property to improve the efficiency.

The benefits of knitted gauzes:

  • Greater surface area for catalysis;
  • Reduced probability of NH3 by-pass;
  • Reduced risk of breakdowns;
  • Stronger material;
  • Extended campaign length;
  • Lower metal loss;
  • Flexibility to suit particular customer requirements.
